A Study on Directions and Methods of Human Right Centered Social Work Practice with Persons with Dementia

Abstract
The study aims to present the direction and methods of human right centered social work practice with persons with dementia so it can provide a starting point of systematic discussion in the study and field of social work. For the purpose of the study, three major approaches on dementia -medical, psycho-social and citizenship- were reviewed in relation to human right centered practice. Human right centered social work practice with persons with dementia means to promote both personal rights and social rights of persons with dementia during the whole process of social work practice, which is firmly based on the most essential value of social work profession. It can be realized by overcoming the effects of dominant medical approach on dementia and emphasizing the psycho-social and citizenship approaches. Several concrete methods were proposed to implement human right centered social work practice with persons with dementia as follows£ºfocusing on persons with dementia, intervening in persons with early-stage dementia, developing effective communication skills, adopting life time approach based on understanding personal history, and promoting social participation. Future directions and dilemmas were presented in human right centered social work practice with persons with dementia.
